Tudor Gardens

2 Tudor City Place was the final apartment house to be erected in Tudor City, an enclave with its own parks in the shadow of the United Nations. Dubbed “Tudor Gardens,” the building is located on a quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac and consists of two towers separated by a planted courtyard. They were developed on a site previously occupied by tennis courts — one of the many perks Tudor City residents of yesteryear enjoyed prior to the structure’s 1957 debut.

Not only is it the youngest of the 13 Tudor City towers, it’s also the only one in the group not embellished with the Tudor-esque design that was in vogue back in the 1920s when architect Fred Fillmore French first began construction on the ambitious city-within-a-city complex. And yet, it retains that old New York charm that lends the block its rhythm.

Tudor Gardens is also unique in that it’s the only building in the horse-shoe-shaped streetscape that directly faces the East River (the others face West). But like the others, residents may enjoy  the privately-run — but open to the public — parks that give the neighborhood a romantic, oasis-like aura.

The full-service co-op consists of 15 floors with 333 residences and is also located near Grand Central and the Midtown Tunnel. The board allows pied-a-terres, co-purchasing, up to 70% financing and parents buying for children. The monthly maintenance includes electricity.
There are 257 closings in the red brick building on record since Sept. 24,1985 — a year before the verdant Tudor City Greens Parks were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
