One Madison — official address at 23 East 22nd St. — was constructed between 2006 and 2010. It stretches to 60 stories (621 feet) and has 53 residential units.
CetraRuddy, the firm that designed the tower, gave it a height-to-width ratio of 12:1. As a result, it’s one of the skinniest buildings in New York City.
When the building was originally announced, it was to be 47 stories and referred to as The Saya. Its name was changed to One Madison Park around the time that construction began in 2006 and then to One Madison after it was taken over by the Related Companies.
One Madison is surrounded by various historic districts (i.e. the Ladies' Mile Historic District, Gramercy Park Historic District, and Madison Square North Historic District).
At one point during its development, financial difficulties prevented sales of residential units from taking place in 2010. A litany of financial and legal spats followed, including allegations of fraud. One Madison was subsequently forced into bankruptcy by some of its creditors in June 2010.
In 2013, ownership of the building had passed to a consortium of creditors, including Related Companies, the CIM Group, and HFZ Capital Group. Construction wrapped that year.
By February 2014, seventy-five percent of the building's units had been sold. News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch was one of the buyers, picking up a triplex penthouse (plus a full-floor apartment below it) for $57.3 million.
One Madison contains 53 residential units, with the first five stories devoted to various service and commercial spaces as well as amenities like a lounge and screening room; private dining room; a fitness center; a 50-foot lap pool and steam room; and a playroom for children.
The building also has a full-time doorman and concierge service.
One Madison is topped by a 6,850-square-foot triplex penthouse with a 586-square-foot wraparound terrace providing its residents with a 360-degree view of the Manhattan skyline.
Design firm Yabu Pushelberg worked on some of the apartments, in addition to the interiors of the main lobby and amenity spaces. Lighting design firm Cooley Monato Studio also worked on the building.
Residents who commute can get to the 4/5/6 and N/Q/R/L subway lines within eight minutes.
