About This Property
Unusual, Exciting, Prime West Village Studio
History
Located in the Greenwich Village Historic District, 34 and 36 Barrow Street were built in 1828 by James H. Stephens and David P. Pye, respectively. Carpenters by trade, the two men had purchased the land the previous year from Charles Oakley, a well-to-do attorney, real estate developer and landlord, who commissioned seven homes on the block from 1826 to 1828. Originally two and a half stories with dormers, the Federal-style buildings boast identical Flemish bond brick fronts, though in the 1870's, both roofs were raised to accommodate a third floor.
Apartment
A prototypically charming West Village cooperative, Apartment 3 at 36 Barrow Street is a light-flooded studio with six windows and three exposures: facing north, south and west. Additional features of this apartment include an eat-in-kitchen, bedroom alcove, office, a washer and dryer--and notably, three south-facing windows overlooking Barrow Street and the Manhattan skyline beyond.
Neighborhood
The West Village is considered one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the country. Established before the Manhattan grid was firmly rooted, this neighborhood has the ambling charm of a European city with an artistic, political and architectural history that is uniquely and decidedly American. Today this area is prized for its numerous beloved buildings, restaurants, boutiques and coffee shops?as well as its proximity to all things downtown, including the West Side bike and running paths, Washington Square Park and Lower Fifth Avenue.
