THE OSBORNE

Thomas Osborne began the construction of this rusticated Romanesque Revival and Italian Renaissance Palazzo-style building in 1883 with architect James Edward Ware.  An array of skilled artisans also worked on the historic Byzantine lobby with contributions by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, muralist John LaFarge, and Tiffany Studios. Original plans for the building included "a porte-cochre, a billiard room, a florist, a resident doctor and druggist and on the roof, a lawn for playing croquet."  Diagonally across from Carnegie Hall, which was completed in 1891, and opposite the remarkable Alwyn Court cooperative on West 58th Street, The Osborne has a unique position among New York's finest landmarks.

THE APARTMENT

From the foyer turn right to enter the double living room of this handsome cooperative, presently adorned by the original wood and plaster that has expertly been restored and finished to capture and preserve its original beauty. With ceiling heights measuring 13'6" and floor to ceiling bookshelves lining the walls, this magnificent space is anchored by two wood burning fireplaces at either end of the room and the front wall has tall dramatic windows allowing sun to pour in through regular glass and upper stained glass panes, recreated and Landmark approved.

From the living room, an oversized pocket door leads to the library, with another wood burning fireplace and conveniently positioned half bath.  The foyer also includes a coat closet and provides access to the large windowed formal dining room featuring a uniquely ornamented original fireplace.  A second doorway from the dining room leads to the Poggenpohl chef's kitchen with a Wolfe stove, SubZero fridge, large center island, granite countertops, washer & dryer and a second entry off the main corridor.  A full bath is conveniently positioned directly across the corridor opposite the kitchen.  Down a set of stairs, toward the private quarters, there is a large linen closet.  The master bedroom includes a walk-in closet leading to a full bath.  Continue along the hallway passing two additional closets, and enter another bedroom which mirrors the master bedroom, and includes a walk in closet and full bath.  The apartment is complete with 4 fireplaces, central air & a fresh air exchange.

All in all, this restoration reflects the essence of Edith Wharton's gaslight New York, but infused with all conveniences of the 21st century.
