2 Horatio St. is a pre-war building located between Greenwich and Eighth Avenues, just on the corner of Greenwich Avenue and across from Jackson Square Park.

It is part of Greenwich Village, which is said to be a “timeless neighborhood of Manhattan.” At first glance, its exterior offers nothing more than an outmoded red and brown brick style.

But the second look reveals its Art Deco features with four horizontal terracotta designs including Greek key patterns at the fourth and 16 floors combined with square elements at the cornice. Moderately ornamented, 2 Horatio Street honors the peaceful rustic style.

Its history goes back to 1929 when a renowned real estate development company Bing & Bing purchased 75 small lots around Abingdon Square, Sheridan Square, and Jackson Square Park, on Horatio, West Twelfth, and Christopher Streets with an idea to construct five exclusive residential buildings. The project was said to be the firm’s biggest venture this far downtown.

Bing & Bing chose the skills of an architect Robert T. Lyons for 2 Horatio Street. They previously collaborated on several projects including the world’s then tallest apartment building – 17 stories – at 903 Park Avenue, which was finalized in 1916.

In 1985, the company sold 2 Horatio Street, making it a cooperative apartments building two years later. Now, the pet-friendly cooperative boasts 242 units over 17 stories, with various unit combinations.

It offers 24-hour doormen, live-in attendant, a porter, storage units, resident’s laundry room, and a bike room. In addition to being based across the street from Jackson Square Park, it is also near Hudson River Park. Public transportation and The High Line are accessible on foot. The neighborhood harbors fine restaurants and dining shops, and the nightlife there is vibrant.

Various celebrities have lived here. Producer and talk show host Andy Cohen of “Watch What Happens Live” is a resident of 2 Horatio Street. His neighbors include Sex And The City star Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband, actor Matthew Broderick. The West Village is also home to actresses Liv Tyler and Julianne Moore, and Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes.
