The Apthorp

390 West End Ave. is a historic condominium apartment building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It was christened “The Apthorp” after 18th-century figure Charles Ward Apthorp, who owned Apthorp Farm, which took up 300 acres in this part of New York City.

Architects Clinton & Russell designed the building in an Italian Renaissance style for William Waldorf Astor. It was erected in 1908 and occupies the full block between Broadway, West End Avenue, and West 78th and 79th Streets.

Indeed, residents will feel like they’re time warping back to the Gilded Age when they walk through The Apthorp’s wrought-iron gates, look around the building’s tremendous interior courtyard and gaze at its lifesize limestone sculptures.

Interiors “exude pre-war sophistication,” according to 6sqft.com. Units consist of marble entryways, formal dining rooms, spacious bedrooms and fireplaces. The Apthorp has all the modern fixings and amenities as well, including an on-site parking garage, a fitness center and spa, an entertainment suite (with bar and billiards) and children’s playroom.

The building was sold in 2006 for $426 million. Some $95 million was subsequently spent on renovations. At the time of the transaction, 100 of the 163 rental units were rent stabilized.

In 2008, The Apthorp was converted into a condo with asking prices hovering $3,000 a square foot, or an average of $6.5 million per apartment. It is considered among NYC’s priciest condominium conversion projects, per the New York Times.

Notable residents include director Nora Ephron, author Joseph Heller, rockstar Cyndi Lauper, singer/actress Jennifer Hudson and actor Al Pacino.

The Apthorp was designated a New York City landmark in 1969, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
