The Executive Towers

1020 Grand Concourse or “The first luxury skyscraper in the Bronx,” as its original brochure described it, is located in Concourse Village between 164th and 165th streets. A 23 story building, featuring 466 units, was built in 1963. Its designer, Philip Birnbaum, also built around 300 apartment buildings — including many towers — in Manhattan.

Previously known as “Executive Towers”, this shiny white brick tower stands out for its “grand entrance pavilion and a semi-circular driveway.” The landscaped entrance cornice has mosaic columns and fronts that provide a kind of “dramatic” feel.

Next to the entrance are placed two “monumental gilded” sculptures of a man and woman, evoking the art of the American sculptor Paul Manship. Residents and visitors are welcomed with a tranquil sound of water coming from a huge fountain in the lobby.

1020 Grand Concourse provides a 24-hour doorman, parking, a live-in superintendent, speedy elevators, and a laundry. It also welcomes pets.

In its proximity is the famous Bronx Museum of the Arts, designed by Arquitectonica, Yankee Stadium, various parks, the Bronx courts, elegant restaurants, and supermarkets. The Bronx Museum, which is a part of the Grand Concourse Historic District, offers a permanent collection with more than 800 paintings, photographs, works on paper, and sculptures. It mainly exhibits contemporary and 20th-century works of art created by American artists, but it also often hosts collections from Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

There is also a 900 Grand Concourse, designed back in 1922 by Maynicke & Franke as the Concourse Plaza Hotel. Throughout the years it served many presidents. In the ‘60s it was transformed into a welfare hotel, and in 1982 it was converted into a federal subsidized senior citizens’ residence.

1020 Grand Concourse’s location provides great traffic connections, being close to subways at 167th Street. Furthermore, just on the corner, there is the express bus, while D/4 lines are reachable on foot, bringing you to midtown very quickly.
