455 Central Park West was built between 1884 and 1886 in Manhattan Valley. Located between West 105th and 106th Streets, the building was designed by Charles Coolidge Haight in a Late Gothic/French Chateau style — inspired by the chateaux of the Loire Valley.

It originally functioned as a cancer treatment and research institution. In fact, The New York Cancer Hospital (as it was called), was the first hospital in the United States dedicated specifically for the treatment of cancer.

The hospital eventually moved and became what is now known as Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. By 1955, 455 "CPW" was used as a nursing home. It closed in 1974. Two years later, the building was designated a New York City landmark and subsequently added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Real estate developer Daniel McLean eventually scored enough financing to buy the property for $21 million and began construction between 2001 and 2005 to convert 455 into luxury condominiums designed by Perkins Eastman Architects. The restoration included the construction of a new 26-story high-rise to adjoin the existing structure, which was dubbed "the castle."

Units at 455 Central Park West sold for as much as $7 million at the time. They highlight several distinct features unlike any other in Manhattan, including cavernous circular rooms, lofty ceilings, and views overlooking Central Park. Tenants enjoy such amenities as a garden, fitness center, spa, indoor pool, and 24-hour concierge service.
