About This Property

Welcome to "The Windel House" - The stately 1773-built home that's rich with history and with many stories to tell.  Home Details & History Notes from the Seller:  The Palatinate (Pfalz) is a state in southwestern Germany.  Its from this region that Georg Windel immigrated to the American colonies in the late 18th Century.  In 1772 he received a land grant from Thomas, 3rd Lord Fairfax, to settle on 141 acres of land in a place called Maurertown in the northern Shenandoah Valley.  Its here that Mr. Windel built a log cabin with an adjacent carriage house which serviced mounts and carriages on the Old Valley Pike (todays Route 11) in 1773.  Maurertown (Maurer is German for mason) was founded by German freemasons who were among the first European settlers in the Shenandoah Valley.  The Valley had not been open to English settlers until the 1750s because of a Royal decree prohibiting settlement west of the Blue Ridge mountains.  The crown was unwilling to pay for defense and stationing of troops on the then-frontier. Germans (and many Scotch-Irish) streamed into the Valley because it reminded them of home, and the rich soil fed by limestone bedrock presented fertile farming land.  By 1770, 76% of the northern Shenandoah Valley was populated by Germans.  The neighboring town of Woodstock was originally named Mullerstadt, but after its incorporation in 1752 was named Woodstock by George Washington who served in the House of Burgesses in Winchester 20 miles to the north.  Washington was a frequent visitor to the region because of his friendship with Peter Muhlenberg, the local Presbyterian minister whose glebe house was located a half mile from the Windel House.  Washington and Muhlenberg would frequently hunt and fish together and some anecdotal evidence suggests Washington may have been a guest at the Windel House owing not only to proximity but also the fact that all of these men were freemasons.   When the American Revolution broke out, Muhlenberg was asked to raise a regiment comprised entirely of Germans from the Valley to help enlist Germans to the fight for independence from England.  Muhlenberg enlisted 300 men to form the 8th Virginia Infantry Regiment, the first German regiment in the Continental Army.  Georg Windel was among them.  In its almost 250 years of existence, there have been 6 owners.  Situated on .6 acres of land, the cabin and combined carriage house are now one single home totaling over 3,000 square feet on two floors.  Kitchen, pub room, two full bathrooms, office, living room, library, den, master bedroom and three more bedrooms.  Laundry room and utility room.  There are two outbuildings including the summer kitchen (which houses the original cooking stove), and a railroad depot building which was erected in 1854 when the Manassas Gap railroad was built.  There is an attic space for storage and an unfinished basement under the old carriage house section.  Hardwood floors throughout the first floor have all been recently refinished.  Half of the home has central air and heat, while the other half is heated by an oil furnace.  Most windows, plumbing and electrical have all been upgraded.  New washer and dryer.  The house also includes the original land grant issued to Georg Windel.  WHAT IS NEARBY:  1 Mile to Shenandoah County Park, 6.3 Miles to Walmart, 5.4 Miles to Food Lion, 3.8 Miles to I-81 Exit 291, 12.8 Miles to I-66/I-81 Interchange, 28 Miles to Winchester VA, and 90 Miles to DC.  Sold As-Is.
