240 Centre Street was built between 1905 and 1909. Up until 1973, this Beaux-Arts building — designed by Francis L.V. Hoppin of Hoppin & Koen — served as the headquarters of the New York City Police Department. It was designated a New York City landmark in 1978, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Eight years later, it was converted into luxury condominiums by the firm of Ehrenkranz Group & Eckstut.

Now known as the “Police Building Apartments,” 240 Centre is a true blast from the past. Aside from a rich history, it’s opulence overload even before entering the building’s grandiose marble lobby.

Per the New York Times, this iconic address is "a dramatic heap of Baroque – and Renaissance-inspired domes, cupolas, colonnades, pilasters and pediments, caked with carved ornament and wedged into the narrow block once occupied by the butcher stalls of Centre Market."

If you’re fortunate enough to win board approval, there are grand homes within, complete with high ceilings, stone archways, granite kitchen counters, luxury bathrooms, floors that span nearly 40 feet and large windows offering open-sky views framed by the rooftops of Nolita.

Additional amenities include a landscaped garden, a gym, a full-time doorman, concierge, and resident manager. Also, legend has it that there's an underground tunnel that links the building to nearby Onieal’s Grand Street Restaurant (police officers of yesteryear supposedly used the secret passageway during Prohibition).  

Previous residents of this landmarked locale include journalist Judith Miller and her husband, New York Review of Books co-founder Jason Epstein.
