211 Central Park West is a luxury, 23-floor apartment building located between West 81st and 82nd Streets, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. This "pre-war" residence — dubbed “The Beresford” after a hotel of the same name that previously occupied the site from 1889 — is considered one of the most prestigious addresses in Manhattan.
It is one of five apartment blocks on Central Park West designed by renowned architect Emery Roth — the others being The El Dorado, The San Remo, The Alden and The Ardsley. Construction of The Beresford wrapped in 1929 and it is the largest of the five Roth-designed buildings by volume.
From outside The Beresford, residents and passersby will marvel at its three distinctive octagonal copper-capped corner towers. It also has two very prominent street-front facades — the eastern facade overlooking Central Park with the southern facade overlooking Theodore Roosevelt Park and the American Museum of Natural History.
Inside, units tout grand scale layouts with ballroom-sized rooms, soaring 10 foot ceilings, wood-burning fireplaces, terraces, unparalleled architectural details, and private or semi-private elevator landings.
Converted into a co-op in 1962, members of 211 CPW are treated with white-glove service, 24 hour doormen and elevatormen, a state-of-the-art fitness club, huge storage rooms, bike and laundry rooms. Since then, many of the units — of which there are 208 in total — have been combined to create larger homes, with some units consisting of two to four bedrooms.
Over the years, The Beresford has been a home to some big-name celebrities, business leaders and public figures including comedian Jerry Seinfeld, actress Glenn Close, singer Diana Ross, film director Mike Nichols, former Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit (who bought a co-op that once belonged to actor Tony Randall for $18 million) and organized crime figure Meyer Lansky.
The entrance is about 500 feet to the B and C subway lines, and less than half a mile from the 1, 2 and 3 trains. It’s also within walking distance to the Richard Gilder Graduate School at the American Museum of Natural History and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
