The Downtown Club

20 West St., previously known as The Downtown Club, is located near the southernmost point of Manhattan.

This 1930 building includes all address numbers on 18-20 West Street, as well as the even address numbers on 28-32 Washington Street. It stands out due to its orange brick, skillful masonry, and decorative facades.

The Downtown Club building was designed in the Art Deco style by Starrett & van Vleck, who had designed several New York City department stores including the Lord & Taylor Building, the Bloomingdale's Building, and the Saks Fifth Avenue Building.

Rising about 39 stories (518 feet high), 20 West St. currently has 280-plus units — each one with stainless steel GE appliances, granite kitchen countertops and Italian marble in the bathrooms.

It offers studios as well as one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans — some with private outdoor terraces. The building has a 24-hour concierge service and features amenities including a valet service, fitness center, residential lounge, common terrace, and indoor bicycle storage.

Residents benefit from being located in Manhattan’s Financial District and being within walking distance to Battery Park and the Hudson Waterfront.

Previously, the building served as a member’s only social and athletic club. In 2002, the club declared bankruptcy.

It was designated as a city landmark in 2000. Five years later, the Downtown Club underwent a major renovation and re-opened as a residential tower.
