The Standish is a Beaux Arts-style, 12-story building located at 171 Columbia Heights.

This historic building, designed by Frank S. Lowe, was built in 1903 after landowner Eliza Matilda Chandler sold the property to a company for $75,000. Chandler was the daughter of Myles Standish, an English officer who who came to Plymouth, Massachusetts, on the Mayflower in 1620

The company would go on to build the Standish Arms Hotel.

Comic book aficionados will relish in the fact that it once served as the fictional apartment building of Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, in the early DC comic books (he lived on the fifth floor). Also, playwright and Brooklyn native Arthur Miller mentioned the Standish in “Death of a Salesman” (even though the setting of the play is Boston).

In real life, the building was sold to the Jehovah's Witnesses in 1981. The religious group turned it into housing, but then sold it in 2007 to Taurus Investment Holdings, which then converted the building into 122 rentals.

Developers DDG and Westbrook Partners would later transform the building into a luxury — and spacious — 29-unit condominium. Per the New York Times, its brick facade was stripped and recoated “to mimic its original ivory hue.” The limestone base was also restored, while a marble fire staircase with cast-iron railings was installed.

The building also touts original artwork by painter Andie Dinkin.

“The Standish,” which launched sales in 2016, has plenty of amenities, including a fitness center, 24-hour concierge, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the New York City skyline.

Among its famous residents include Matt Damon, who broke records with his purchase of a $16.75 million penthouse in the building. His neighbors reportedly include actress Mary Louise Parker, actor Paul Giamatti and celebrity couple Emily Blunt and John Krasinski.
