The San Remo, located between West 74th and 75th Streets, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, is the first twin-towered building to rise in New York City.
Opened in 1930, the luxury 27-floor building described by New York Times's Glen Justice as "a dazzling two-tower building with captivating views of Central Park" is a masterpiece from acclaimed architect Emery Roth. Named by an apartment hotel that previously occupied the current site, The San Remo is one of the most attractive and expensive apartment buildings in Manhattan.
In 2016, Goldman Sachs Chairman and CEO David Solomon sold his Upper West Side 5,000-plus-square-foot home for $21.5 million. The building – which was converted into a cooperative in 1972 — has two addresses, 145 and 146 Central Park West, being designed to have two separate terrazzo and marble lobbies for each half of the structure.
It has 138 units, with an average apartment spanning over 3,000 square feet in lower levels, roughly 2,500 square feet apartments in the north tower and two-story units spanning approximately 5,800 square feet in the south tower. The ten stories high iconic towers that start on the 18th floor of the building are rounded off with Renaissance-style Corinthian temples and 22-foot-high copper lanterns.
Apart from a front-row seat overlooking Central Park, some of the many amenities the residents can enjoy are 24-hour doormen, two lobbies, private and semi-private elevator landings, a fitness center, recreational area, a private garden, community room, laundry, and storage room.
Barry Manilow, Steven Spielberg, Dustin Hoffman, Donna Karan, Demi Moore, Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Bruce Willis are just some of many notable persons and celebrities whose home was and is The San Remo.
And while its board has a reputation for "lenient admissions standards," singer Madonna was rejected after applying to buy a three-bedroom unit for $1.2 million back in 1985 when she was 26 years old.
