Christodora House

This stunning art-deco structure was built in 1928 as housing for Alphabet City’s growing immigrant population. As time marched on, the building became a luxury condo for those seeking to be in the center of artist and activist movements. Christodora House currently holds 87 units with 16 floors.

Designed by architect Henry C. Pelton, this historic building features a full-time doorman, laundry facilities on every single floor, a bike room, elevators, and a live-in super. There is no specific place to park, but there’s a decent amount of street parking and the building is close to the L train. This condo allows pets as well as subletting.

Christodora units range from studio apartments to three bedroom apartments, but each one is spacious and features modern, luxury appliances. There is at least one full bath for every bedroom in the unit.

Additional features include refrigerators and dishwashers. All units have been renovated as of 1986, and upgrades take place every few years to keep things modern. With high ceilings and plenty of natural light, you’ll feel right at home at Christodora.

The Christodora is listed as a protected landmark, being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Famous residents, including Iggy Pop and Vincent D’Onofrio, helped push for historic preservation due to the building’s influence on the neighborhood throughout every decade of its existence. For example, Christodora was once the tallest social services building in the world, and it was the location of one of George Gershwin's first live performances.
