Remarkable Van Rensselaer Lower Manor House is one of the oldest homes in Columbia County and has been owned by the original family since they established the Claverack Patroonship in 1685. Rear stone section is the oldest, built c. 1685-1715, and houses a kitchen hearth and bake oven with iron set kettle. Front late 18th century frame section has a steep pitched roof over a long low porch with center entry and center chimney with parlor rooms each with finely carved fireplace mantels and other period details including original doors, hardware, and wide board floors. Side entry, c. 1790, connects the front and rear sections. Rear roof was raised c. 1870 and later additions provided space for two apartments. Most recently a three family residence, it could be returned to a single-family.
