Of the 16,000 places identified nationwide, 9,000 met the population criteria for this report. <a href=\"http:\/\/realtyhop.com\">RealtyHop<\/a> then ranked these places by median closed transaction price, generating a list of the most expensive places across the country.<\/p>\n<h2>Key Findings<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtyhop.com\/for-sale\/atherton-ca\">Atherton<\/a>, California<\/b>, is the most expensive place in America, where the median closed transaction price is $8,113,000.<\/li>\n<li><b>61<\/b> of the most expensive places reside in California, the most of any state. <b>Eight<\/b> of the Top 10 most expensive places reside in California.<\/li>\n<li>The 100 most expensive places span across just <b>twelve states<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li><b>The median closed transaction price for all 100 places is <b>$2,254,578.50<\/b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The 10 Most Expensive Places<\/h2>\n<p>The country\u2019s most expensive places are located in expensive pockets such as the San Francisco Peninsula. Atherton, CA, ranks as the most expensive place in the country, where the median closed transaction price is $8,113,000. The next location on the list, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtyhop.com\/for-sale\/hillsborough-ca\">Hillsborough<\/a>, CA, resides under 20 miles away from Atherton and has a median closed transaction value of $5,500,000. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtyhop.com\/for-sale\/woodside-ca\">Woodside<\/a>, CA ties for second place. Homes in these locations boast thousands of square feet, luxurious finishes, and access to their local communities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8980 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realtyhop.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/most-expensive-us-places-chart.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"622\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>New York and California Contain 73% of the Most Expensive Places<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realtyhop.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/most-expensive-us-places-2022-real-featured-image.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the most expensive places nationwide reside in twelve states, where 61 are in California, 12 are in New York, and 6 are in Texas. New York and California contain nearly three-quarters of the country\u2019s most expensive places.<\/p>\n<h2>Methodology<\/h2>\n<p>This Report analyzed the most expensive places in the United States using the 2022 median closed transaction price using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtyhop.com\/\">RealtyHop<\/a>\u2019s property records data. For the purpose of this report, places include cities, towns, and villages with a minimum population size of 2,500 based on the 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/programs-surveys\/acs\/news\/data-releases.html\">American Community Survey<\/a> by the Census Bureau.<\/p>\n<p>The following building types were used to calculate median sales price: condo, co-op, house, multifamily, residential, townhouse, and triplex. Any listings classified purely as \u201cland\u201d were excluded from the study. Any listings with invalid zip codes, including single-building zips located in New York City, were also excluded.
